Tarragona Cathedral

Important monuments from the Medieval past of Tarragona are still intact and add to the importance of the Roman ruins a Medieval artistic heritage that is best reflected in the Cathedral, a significant compound.

Tarragona Cathedral was built on approximately the same site of what was once the Roman temple. Construction began in the 12th century in the Romanesque style and continued throughout the Gothic period. The building was consecrated in 1331; however, it could not be finished due to the Black Death, which swept through the region.

The high portal and the rose window on its façade are one of the most emblematic images of the city. At the entrance to the cloister, there is the Diocesan Museum and the spectacular altarpiece of Santa Tecla. The sculptural work of the cloister is one of the most outstanding examples of Romanesque art in Catalonia and dates from the beginning of the 13th century. As for the Diocesan Museum, it is worth highlighting the collections of medieval and modern religious art from Tarragona and its diocese, among which are altarpieces, stone sculptures and wood carvings, goldsmithing, forging, textiles, ceramics, etc.
