Port Tarragona Strengthens Alliances with the Cruise Sector at the European Cruise Week
The port has consolidated its position as a first-class port for cruise operations in the Western Mediterranean.
It has held working meetings with several cruise lines to cooperate on strategic projects.
Port Tarragona took part in the latest edition of the European Cruise Week, held in Rotterdam. This event, organized by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), has become one of the benchmark gatherings for the cruise industry across Europe. Port Tarragona reinforced its positioning as a leading port for cruise operations. In addition, it showcased Costa Daurada as one of the most complete destinations in the Western Mediterranean.
The event provided first-hand insight into the main trends shaping the sector. At the same time, the port held working meetings with several cruise companies to strengthen alliances and collaborate on strategic projects.
The European Cruise Week follows a hybrid format including conferences, business-to-business (B2B) meetings, and an exhibition area. In this edition, the conferences focused on sustainability and energy transition, innovation, the impact of cruise activity on destinations, and the future of tourism in Europe — all areas in which Port Tarragona has paid special attention since the start of its cruise operations.
Participation in this event, organized by CLIA, the leading association in the cruise sector, represented a new opportunity to position Port Tarragona as a top-tier port for cruise operations thanks to its facilities and characteristics. At the same time, it served as a showcase to highlight the diversity of attractions that Costa Daurada offers as a destination.
In addition, the European Cruise Week has become an opportunity to strengthen ties with cruise lines and generate B2B contacts. Port Tarragona held several meetings with some of the main operators in the market to consolidate relationships and promote new collaborations in strategic projects for the future.
Premium cruises, the key for 2025
The European Cruise Week also served as a prelude to the start of the cruise season. For the 2025 season, figures are expected to be very similar to the previous year. In fact, the arrival of 65 cruise ships is scheduled, 19 of which will be docking at Port Tarragona for the first time. In total, 26 cruise companies are expected to call at Tarragona’s docks.
Attracting new routes with premium and luxury cruise lines is one of the main priorities for Tarragona Cruise Port and the Port Authority. This market niche brings more cruise calls to the port and a smaller number of passengers, but with higher purchasing power, making it highly attractive. Since 2019, this market segment has grown fivefold at Port Tarragona.
