Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas docks in Tarragona for the first time and the metope exchange ceremony is held
This Friday 7 October, for the first time three cruise ships were docked simultaneously in the Port of Tarragona. The first of the three vessels entered Tarragona waters at 9 am on Thursday 6 October.
Costa Favolosa
The first was the Costa Favolosa belonging to Costa Cruise Lines, an Italian company with more than seventy years’ experience in the cruise industry. Despite having arrived on Thursday, the ship will begin operations on Friday 7 October and is expected to be in port until 6 pm on Friday. The vessel arrived from the port of Savona and is en route to Marseille. It is docked on the Llevant Wharf and will take on passengers in Tarragona. Launched in 2010, it has a maximum capacity of 3,800 passengers, a length of 290 m and a beam of 35.52 m.
Jewel of the Seas
At 6 am on Friday 7 October, the Jewel of the Seas was the second cruise ship to dock at the new Balears Wharf. This was its first call at Tarragona and consequently the traditional ceremony of exchanging metopes was held. It was attended on behalf of the Port of Tarragona by Núria Obiols and on behalf of the vessel by Captain Michael Rolf Lindberg. The ship belongs to Royal Caribbean, a cruise line founded in Norway with headquarters in Florida (USA) that operates in the Caribbean and Europe. In this case, the Jewel of the Seas was calling at Tarragona en route from Ibiza to Syracuse (Italy). Built in 2004 and renovated in 2016, the vessel has a capacity of approximately 2,500 passengers, a beam of 293 m and a length of 32 m. It will be docked in Tarragona until 5 pm, during which time it will carry out a total embarkation and disembarkation operation.
Artania
The third cruise liner, the Artania, arrived at Port Tarragona at 8 am on Friday 7 October and will remain docked on the Llevant Wharf until 6 pm. The vessel belongs to the German company Phoenix Reisen, which has more than thirty years’ experience in the world of cruises. The Artania is en route from Cadiz to Toulon. It has a maximum capacity of 1,188 passengers, a length of 231 m and a beam of 32m.
Three cruise liners simultaneously
Operating with three vessels at the same time has been made easier by the new Balears Wharf. The new infrastructure, inaugurated in October 2021, is designed to streamline the arrival and departure of cruise ships in Tarragona. The improvement is also thanks to the team of the terminal's new concessionary company, Global Ports, one of the most important companies in the cruise terminal management sector. It has been operating in Tarragona since last February.
The 2022 cruise season began in April, specifically on the 15th of that month, with the arrival of the Azamara Quest. In the six months since then a total of 24 cruise ships have docked at the Balears Wharf pier with approximately 47,016 passengers, both in transit and embarking and disembarking.
